The Women of Brewster Place was made into a popular television miniseries starring and produced by Oprah Winfrey, who is an ardent fan of the novel and its writer. Walden Two takes a dive into behavior modification through these concepts to create a society that is considered ideal. Amy Tan does a phenomenal job, not only by portraying a very real mother-daughter relationship, but at showing how much a young girl can change. Now, a quarter of a century later, Gloria Naylor has compiled an encore volume, Children of the Night, bringing this extraordinary series up to date. Brewster Place is the setting in which they act on, and react to, the circumstances of their lives. I've long admired Naylor and so thought it might be a good read.
The theme of the story is that there are two kinds of people: the one the mother wants her to be and the one Jing-mei the protagonist and narrator of the story strives to be.
